Using GDSN Data to Help Consumers Recycle Right!
ERbin is a Wisconsin-based startup tackling the basic but expensive problem that consumers aren’t recycling right. With your product data and our app technology, together, we’re going to clean up the contamination problem in the recycling industry.
ERbin is the only app in the U.S. that connects consumers to brand-level, product-specific recyclability information based on geographic location. This means that a consumer can scan the UPC barcode of any product or text search for any product or material to get local how-to-recycle answers.
ERbin is a solution unlike any other in the world of public recycling education because it tackles the two biggest barriers to consumer recycling accuracy:
- Acceptable recovered materials vary from one community to the next
- Consumer goods packaging is increasingly complex
In order for us to help accomplish this goal, ERbin is looking to engage with GDSN CPG suppliers and utilize your item content to help fulfill this important initiative.
How We Use the Data
We take very seriously the representation of your brand and product in our app. That’s why we are coming directly to the source for your permission to include your products in our app, as well as to make sure we have the most accurate product information.
As seen in the app screenshots, below, the only product information our users ever see are
- Product image
- Brand and product name
- Recycling instructions for that product
ERbin determines the proper disposal instructions by using our own software technology and one-on-one conversations with local recycling center operators. The additional product packaging attributes we request from you enable us to determine the correct disposal instructions.
Who We Are
We are a Wisconsin-based startup comprised of a team of passionate people who want to make a positive impact on our local environments, local communities, and local economies. We believe recycling education can be better. Our objectives are to generate stronger financial returns for waste haulers, material recovery facilities and alternative drop-off businesses while creating cost savings for community recycling programs.
Since our start in May 2018, we have executed our business plan to the point that we are now beta testing the app in Weston, WI, in partnership with the Marathon County Solid Waste Department, Village of Weston, Portage County Material Recovery Facility and Advanced Disposal. New communities are slated to come on board in late summer 2019.
ERbin is a recipient of two University of Wisconsin-Extension Ideadvance Seed Funding grants and was a finalist in the 2019 Wisconsin Governor’s Business Plan Contest.

The Benefit to Brands, Products, and Retailers
We understand that consumer packaged goods brands are on the hot seat to figure out how to make their packaging more environmentally friendly. We also understand that PR and marketing departments for these same brands are working overtime to show millennials and Generation Z’ers how socially responsible their brand is in order to earn buy-in and trust.
ERbin is a way to solve both of these issues. We give brands the perfect opportunity to show that you are trying to be a socially responsible corporate citizen. And it doesn’t require any changes to your packaging or product. Simply by ensuring your customers are properly disposing of your products is a major start to cleaning up the contamination problem in the consumer recycling stream.
Want even better news? When we grow our app user base to the scale, we can help your brand be even more socially responsible. We will be able to send recycling instructions with online grocery orders for each and every product purchased by a consumer based on where they live. If a consumer buys your product online, we’ll be able to give our how-to-recycle instructions to retailers who can include a message about how to properly dispose of your product. Finally, we’ll have a new metric for your sustainability teams to understand how many consumers are actively recycling or properly disposing of your packaging.
Using data to do good. That is what ERbin is all about.
